Bob Hoskins, known for 'Roger Rabbit,' dies at 71

British actor Bob Hoskins, whose roles ranged from London gangsters to FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover and who starred opposite a cast of cartoon characters in ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’, has died after a bout of pneumonia, his publicist said on Wednesday.

He was 71.

A statement issued on behalf of his wife Linda and his children said: “We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Bob. Bob died peacefully at hospital last night surrounded by family, following a bout of pneumonia.”

Hoskins announced his retirement from acting in 2012, saying at the time that he was suffering from Parkinson’s disease, an incurable muscular disorder.

Hoskins started his career in the 1970s on British television shows such as ‘Thick as Thieves’ and ‘Rock Follies of ’77′. Moving into big film roles, his turn as a mobster in 1980s ‘The Long Good Friday’ shot him to stardom and defined his tough guy persona.

He was nominated for a best actor Oscar in 1987 for ‘Mona Lisa’, in which he starred opposite Sir Michael Caine and Robbie Coltrane, and won a Golden Globe award.

The Suffolk-born actor became a staple face in the British film industry, often playing Cockney-speaking characters in both comedy and drama genres with his trademark gravelly voice.

His big Hollywood break came in 1988 when he played Eddie Valiant in ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’, a role for which he received a Golden Globe nomination. He then went on to play roles in 1990′s ‘Mermaids’ and 1991′s ‘Hook’. He portrayed Hoover in the 1995 movie ‘Nixon’.

In his later years he took on parts in smaller films, including a role in ‘Made in Dagenham’ about women seeking equal pay with male workers at a car plant near London.

He also played the voice of the character Winston in the 2006 film ‘Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties’.

Tamil superstar Rajnikanth‘s daughter, Soundarya feels that her movie ‘Kochadaiiyaan‘, which is India’s first motion capture photo-realistic 3D animated movie, is an attempt to “immortalize her father”.

“3D animated technology is new to India but it is not new to Hollywood. I wanted to immortalize my father through this film,” she said, after receiving the NDTV’s Indian of the Year Award for Technical Innovation in the film.

Soundarya, 29, who received the award from Bollywood star Ranbir Kapoor in the presence of her mother, Latha Rajnikanth, narrated how when she discussed the idea about the film to her superstar father, he quickly said “Go ahead”.

During the award function, Rajnikanth’s pre-recorded message congratulating his daughter was also shown on screen.

“You have made me and the entire country proud,” the superstar said, referring to the Rs 1.25 billion project.

Soundarya said the film is not a cartoon film.

“It is not a cartoon film. It is photo realistic performance where my father has really acted,” the director said.

She said that the film has also animated renowned Tamil actor Nagesh, who died in 2009.

“We found someone who looks like him, acts like him,” Soundarya said, pointing out that such a thing would not have been able in a live action movies.

Aamir Khan Tuesday expressed sadness over the trend of political parties giving tickets to candidates with criminal background considering their winnability, but expressed hope that people at large would stop voting for criminals.

“Political parties give tickets to people with criminal background because they want one seat in the Lok Sabha. The same people later sit in Parliament and decide laws of our country,” Khan said.

“Political parties give tickets to criminals because we vote for them,” Khan, who has been taking up social issues through his television show ‘Satyamev Jayate’, said.

“As a normal Indian I am sad about this. I hope the political parties will rise above all this,” the actor said, adding that parties are catching the right signal.

“Ultimately, these things will change as people at large will stop voting for criminals,” Khan, who exercised his franchise in Mumbai last week, said.

Khan was speaking at the NDTV Indian of the Year Awards function held here. Social activist Aruna Roy and Congress leader and Union Minister Salman Khurshid also spoke on the occasion.

Roy said that to be a part of the “power that decides for us”, we have to actively participate in the voting process.

“The power that decides for us is contained in the system so it is always advisable that we become part of the system. If don’t push the system, then someone else will sit there and make laws in the way they want,” she said.

Admitting to making mistakes under stress, Khurshid said he has been witness to many amendments in criminal laws that were ridiculous.

“Lot of amendments made to the criminal laws are ridiculous. We are making the mistakes under stress. I was also the part of Parliament that has made mistakes,” he said.

Star Wars - Episode VII Cast Announced

Harrison Ford will lead returning and rising stars, including Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Andy Serkis and Oscar Isaac, for the anticipated new ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’ film, Walt Disney Co and Lucasfilm said on Tuesday.

Ford, Fisher and Hamill, who were rumored to be returning to director J.J. Abrams’ reboot of the franchise, will be joined by the series’ original stars Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO) and Kenny Baker (R2-D2).

Ford played Han Solo, Fisher played Princess Leia and Hamill was Luke Skywalker in the original films, but it is not known if they will reprise their roles or have different characters in the new film.

Joining the franchise alongside ‘Lord of the Rings’ star Serkis and ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’ actor Isaac will be Swedish actor Max Von Sydow, ‘Girls’ star Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson and newcomers John Boyega and Daisy Ridley.

“It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud,” Abrams said in a statement.

Disney purchased ‘Star Wars’ creator George Lucas’ Lucasfilm in 2012 for $4.05 billion and announced three new films in the franchise. ‘Episode VII’ is scheduled for release on December 18, 2015.

Vijay Raaz Says Kya Dilli, Kya Lahore' depicts the pain of Partition

Vijay Raaz, who is turning director with ‘Kya Dilli Kya Lahore‘, says his film raises some pertinent questions while depicting the pain and agony of Partition.

“My film depicts the pain and the agony that every average Indian or any Pakistani has gone through. I have tried to recount those memories through the characters of Rehmat Ali and Samarth Pratap Shastri in this film,” Raaz told reporters while promoting the film.

The 50-year-old actor, best known for his roles in Mira Nair’s ‘Monsoon Wedding’, ‘Delhi Belly‘ and ‘Delhi 6′, is also playing the character of Rehmat in the film.

Set immediately after India’s Independence, the film narrates what happens when, Samarth, an Indian soldier who came from Lahore after partition meets a Pakistani soldier, Rehmat who was born and brought up in Delhi’s Chandni Chowk but had to shift to Lahore after Partition.

On choosing to debut as a director with a subject like this, Raaz said, “I never thought that I will be directing but when the story came to me, I got too involved with it. Being born and brought up in Delhi I can connect to the emotions, subsequently the producer offered me to direct.”

“The film is based on a serious issue, but as both of us have done earlier, we could not resist including comedy in it,” said Manu Rishi, who plays the character of Samarth, the Indian soldier.

‘Kya Dilli Kya Lahore’ is slated to hit the screens in India on May 2.

The makers are planning to release the film in Pakistan and are in talks with some distributors there but things are yet to be sorted.

“I don’t think that our film will be banned or create trouble anywhere, because it is unlike the other Indian films who bash Pakistan or vice-versa,” Rishi said.

The film’s first trailer was released on Wagah Border in 2012.

Malayalam films won't release till ban on Mohanlal-starrer is lifted

Film Employees Federation of Kerala, a union of film technicians and directors, today warned that if the ban on Mohanlal starrer ‘Mr Fraud’, scheduled to be released on May 8 was not lifted, no Malayalam films would be exhibited in theatres in the state.

The decision was taken at an emergency general body meeting of FEFKA, film director and FEFKA president Sibi Malayil told reporters.

Since the ban was imposed “unilaterally” by Kerala Film Exhibitors Federation, FEFKA has decided not to hold talks with the theatre owners, he said.

Speakers at the meeting criticized the theatre owners decision to impose the ban on the film by B Unnikrishnan, FEFKA General Secretary. Film directors Joshy, Kamal, Ranji Panickker, dubbing artist Bhagyalaksmy were among those who participated in the meeting, he said.

The theatre owners are only agents to reach the films to the people. The cinemas cannot be run by exhibiting films from others languages, he said.

FEFKA will also hold talks with Producers Association and Exhibitors association tomorrow. In the first phase, there were no plans to stop shooting works, he said.

The ban was imposed against Unnikrishnan as allegedly at his behest well known film directors and actors did not participate in the function held in connection with the inauguration of a new office of Film Exhibitors Federation.

Unnikrishnan had allegedly influenced directors Sibi Malayil, Joshi and Ranjith not to participate in the function, according to the Federation.

Meanwhile, Film Exhibitors Federation president Liberty Basheer lashed out at FEFKA for the decision saying they will not be cowed down by such threats. Film directors cannot take a decision on not releasing films and it is for the film producers to take a call on the issue, he said, adding, let FEFKA stop film shooting.

“I want to build my hero Alka Singh as a franchise. She’ll be my toy to tell many stories. I want her to do many things in the future, including fight America and revive the Soviet Union,” said the director.

But before that, there is a short film he’s directing this monsoon.

“Again it’s about the great Indian dream. This obsession with the middle-class comes from the fact that I was an assistant to Saeed Mirza and Kundan Shah for nine years. I am highly influenced by them. But I feel my cinema needs to make money, so I can continue making the films that I want to,” he added.

Supermodel-designer Kate Moss has created a new collection inspired from her stylish wardrobe for street giant Topshop.

The 40-year-old model’s new range will hit the store and be available for online sale from tomorrow, reported Daily Mirror.

“I have really missed being involved in the design process, and working with the team at Topshop. I am very excited to create a new collection that bears my name,” Moss said.

Music-themed comedy series ‘Austin & Ally’ has been renewed by the Disney Channel.

The series stars Ross Lynch and Laura Marano as singer-songwriters who develop a collaborative personal and professional relationship, reported Ace Showbiz.

The Disney Channel has now formally commissioned a fourth season of ‘Austin & Ally’ to air in the coming months.

The network’s executive vice president Adam Bonnett announced the renewal.

'Captain America,' 'Rio' bring early summer heat to Hollywood

Unlike last year, when every summer weekend seemed to bring one or more mega-budget films, this year studios have spread out their most expensive entries for the warm weather months that traditionally make up roughly 40 percent of annual ticket sales.

This year, the parade of super heroes, animated films and big-budget sequels started two months earlier, in March instead of May.

So far, moviegoers are lining up. Six films released since March 7 have passed or are nearing $100 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales, according to tracking firm Rentrak. Walt Disney Co’s ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier‘ has collected $225 million so far. ‘Divergent‘ from Lions Gate Entertainment Corp has earned $139 million, and Fox’s ‘Rio 2‘ has grossed $96 million.

In the same period last year, only three releases had reached that mark. This year’s early start to summer has pushed the 2014 box office to $3.1 billion, a 9.4 percent hike from last year, according to Rentrak.

“I’d rather have us in April with relatively no competition than in July with a huge movie ahead of us and a huge movie behind us,” Alan Horn, chairman of Walt Disney Studios, said of the release strategy for ‘Captain America’. “It’s hard to find dates.” Read More On MSN

 Warner Bros has no current plans for a Wonder Woman film.

Following the announcement that Zack Snyder will direct a Justice League movie, Warner/DC revealed that a spinoff for the iconic superhero is still not in the works, reported Digital Spy.

Executives are said to be “warm” to the idea of a ‘Wonder Woman’ film starring Batman vs Superman’s Gal Gadot.

“That is our hope,” president of worldwide marketing Sue Kroll said.

Prabhudheva's surprise holiday plan for sons spoilt

Prabhu Dheva had planned an elaborate holiday for himself and his two sons for their summer vacations. But it went all awry when his friend in Chennai lost their passports.

“It was my friend in Chennai who not only lost my passport, but my sons’ passports as well. I wanted to take them to Disneyland in Florida and other places after attending the IIFA (International Indian Film Academy) Weekend and Awards,” Prabhu Dheva said.

“Luckily I had not told my sons about the planned holiday. I wanted to give them a surprise. Had they known about the holiday in advance, they would have been very disappointed on it being cancelled,” he said.

The actor-choreographer-filmmaker now sees a larger plan in this aborted trip.

“How can all our three passports be lost together unless there was a hidden reason for it? My sons and I were not meant to go on this trip. I feel that’s why this happened. I’ll just spend some time with them and maybe plan another trip later. The new passports will take another ten days,” he said.

Doesn’t Prabhu feel like taking a family holiday with a lady also in the family?

“I know what you are hinting at. It’s not as if I’ve not had relationships. I’ve been single for the last two years. And that’s because these past two years have been a time of unprecedented work for me. Where would I have found time for a relationship? I am getting old now. Soon it’d be time for my sons to have girlfriends,” he said.

Curiously, neither of his sons shows any inclination to put on their father’s dancing shoes.

“They’re very young right now. I’ll let them decide what they want to do. Although I followed my father’s (dancing) footsteps, it isn’t necessary that my sons do the same.”

The irregular hours and the erratic schedules have taken their toll on his health.

“My schedules are so jam-packed that I just snatch sleep and food whenever I could. But I’ve decided health comes first. I’ve got a guy to control my food intake. The trouble is he feeds me boiled vegetables for dinner.”

Akshay Kumar is all set to star in and produce ‘Singh is Bling’.

The film, to be directed by Prabhu Dheva, will be produced by Grazing Goat Pictures, which is Kumar and Ashvini Yardi’s production banner.

The title may turn out to be lucky for Akshay as his earlier film ‘Singh is Kinng’ was a big success.

‘Singh is Bling’ marks Prabhu Dheva’s first film which will not be a South remake and reunites him with Akshay after ‘Rowdy Rathore‘.

Konkona Sen Sharma said she is grateful and happy for receiving roles based on the work of Rabindranath Tagore.

Konkona would be next seen in ‘Sajarur Kanta’, in which she plays Deepa, but takes on the role of Nandini from Tagore’s classic play ‘Raktakarabi’ as member of a theatre troupe staging the play.

“It gives a high to me,” the award-winning actress, 34, said while speaking on her character Nandini of Tagore’s ‘Raktakarabi’.

“I am happy that characters with Tagorean references are coming my way a lot more these days,” she said.

Subhash Ghai unfazed with initial response to Kaanchi Film

Subhash Ghai is unfazed with the slow start of his latest directorial ‘Kaanchi‘ at the box office. The movie stars newcomer Mishti in the lead role and the filmmaker says patience is needed to accept films with a new cast.

“Whenever you (a filmmaker) make a film with a newcomer, you don’t need the initial response. In fact, the day you script the film, you already make up your mind that in the first two or three days of its release, the film will not do good,” Ghai told reporters at an event.

“But if anything is good, it picks up,” he added.

‘Kaanchi’ hit the theatres April 25 and it has got a lukewarm response, both from the audience and critics. It minted Rs.1.25 crore in two days since its release.

Saif Ali Khan, who played a Gujarati boy in ‘Kal Ho Na Ho‘, will again experiment with the Gujarati accent in ‘Humshakals‘.

The actor will not only be seen speaking in Gujarati, but he has also decided to add a comic twist in the film, said a source.

“Saif had to learn Gujarati a little more fluently, and since it is not that difficult a task, he started to talk to everyone on the sets in Gujarati,” said the source close to the production team.
