Mel Gibson says Meticulous planning made 'Braveheart' classic

Mel Gibson says his meticulous planning behind the battle scenes of 1995 hit ‘Braveheart’ led to the film’s success.

Mel Gibson says Meticulous planning made 'Braveheart' classic

The 58-year-old actor, who won an Oscar for best direction for the film, said he wanted clarity in the fight scenes and did a lot of detailing to achieve that, reported Contactmusic.

“The thing I wanted out of the battle sequences was clarity. I’ve seen a lot of these battle movies and they just turn into mush.

“I broke it down to archers and horses and hand-to-hand and who had the high ground and the low ground, everybody was clearly delineated, even though it was often the same bunch of people playing different parts,” he said.

‘Braveheart’, the historical war drama had Gibson in the lead role of William Wallace, who led his native Scotland to war against the English. The movie became an instant classic, with its battle scenes admired by all, and also picked up five Oscars.

Gibson also revealed the person who came closest to death on the sets of ‘Braveheart’ was himself.

“There was a horse that nearly killed me. He had a good trick where he did this whole rear-up thing, but he’d also fall backwards, which is a problem if you’ve fallen off first and you’re behind him.

“He did that to me. My stunt double ran in and pulled me out of the way just as the horse fell,” he said.

Saif Ali Khan Says Nothing wrong with sex comedy, I am okay to do it

Saif Ali Khan said he is fine doing a sex comedy provided it is funny and not vulgar.

Saif Ali Khan Says Nothing wrong with sex comedy, I am okay to do it

“Sure, why not. It will be nice to do it (sex comedy) if it is not vulgar but should be funny. Comedy is a liberating thing so anything can be funny… But it can be little dangerous as well, because there is no dignity and respect sometimes. I feel it shouldn’t be dirty,” Saif told us.

The actor said there is nothing wrong with sex comedy films. “I think people are nervous to talk about sex but they should be normal,” he said.

Saif would be next seen in Sajid Khan’s comedy film ‘Humshakals‘.

“I wanted to work with Sajid (director). He works very hard to entertain people. He makes all India kind of comedy films like ‘Heyy Baby’, ‘Housefull’. So you want to do films that are wider in reach and have an appeal,” Saif said.

He said ‘Humshakals’ is different from his previous films where he showed up the funny side of his acting but the roles were ‘urban’, something that suits his personality.

“There are three roles and I am playing three different personalities. Normal things do not interest Sajid,” Saif said, adding the film is his first full-fledged comedy role.

The ‘Dil Chahta Hai‘ actor has also done mimicry of lot of actors including his father-in-law, Randhir Kapoor.

“It is difficult to do mimicry. I don’t think I am a good mimic (artist), I think Riteish Deshmukh does it well. I never paid attention to these things. I did not tell my father-in-law about it. He hasn’t seen it yet. I think imitation is highest form of flattery,” he said.

Actor Sidharth Malhotra says there was a perception in the industry that he can only do lighter glitzy roles and not aggressive ones.

The 29-year-old actor made his acting debut with Karan Johar’s ‘Student of the Year‘ and was seen next in ‘Hasee Toh Phasee‘, both showed a lighter side of him.

Sidharth will be seen in a different character in his upcoming movie ‘Ek Villain‘.

“There is an image of what people perceive I can do a certain kind of a role only. To break that image is important. I kept hearing that I would not be able to shout, yell and do action. I am glad ‘Ek Villain’ came to me,” Siddharth told us in an interview.

He said with ‘Ek Villain’ he has got an opportunity to break his “boy-next-door” image.

“It is a way of answering criticism and speculations that whether I am here to perform or for (just) glamour. For this film I have worked on my look, body language. I think the general vibe after ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’ was that I have a ‘sweet-boy’ image. If I keep doing same thing every six months, I don’t expect the audience to get entertained by it,” he said.

Sidharth said he was little nervous before shooting as the role was something different.

“I had not done this kind of role before. The character has negative shade to it and there is a love story as well. I don’t know if it (the film Ek Villain) will be successful or not. Promo has been accepted, so I think there is some expectation from this film,” he added.

In real life, Sidharth admits he too has a dark side to his personality like everyone else.

The 69-year-old actor said that he learnt from his past mistakes after temporarily splitting from his wife last year, reported Digital Spy.

“When you are younger you care what other people think. And you take the person closest to you for granted. You waste a lot of energy on strangers to make a good impression. When you’re older you focus that energy on the people closest to you, on your family. And you’re courteous,” he said.

What is most interesting is that Saif’s partner Dinesh Vijan will turn director with the film starring Saif and me. So I’ve double reason to be happy and excited.”

Adding to her pleasure is the fact this would be her first film with a Khan.

“So far I’ve only worked with the younger heroes, practically all of them from Ranveer Singh to Sushant Singh Rajput to Aditya Roy Kapur. This is my first film with a Khan superstar. Hopefully, I’ll get to work with the other Khans after this.”

Bazmee is not interested in creating an unnecessary and unhealthy competition.

“My producer Feroz Nadiadwala wants us to stick to our December 19 release date. But I see no point in a box office tussle. I’m going to convince him to opt for another release window,” he said.

It isn’t as though Bazmee is not confident of his film.

“I’ve my own audience. But why get into an unnecessary tussle at the box office? It is bound to damage one or the other film. I’d rather wait for another opportune Friday.”

“Raju Hirani is a very fine writer and director. On top of that, he is back with his ’3 Idiots’ leading man Aamir Khan. So there’s bound to be fireworks at the box office. Why take the risk of getting burnt?”

The director is currently recording an additional song for the film which he will film in due time when the film’s entire cast – from Anil Kapoor and John Abraham to Naseeruddin Shah and Nana Patekar – is available to him.

“I am in no hurry. I have no ambition to create a dhamaka (blast) for Christmas. Any Friday will work as long as another big film is not lined up for the same day,” he said.

Dilip Kumar and Madhubala's marriage did not happen

Dilip Kumar and Madhubala would have been together had her father not tried to make a business venture out of their proposed marriage which did not go down well with the actor, who did not want someone else to dictate his career choices.

Dilip Kumar and Madhubala's marriage did not happen

In his just-released autobiography “Dilip Kumar: The Substance And The Shadow”, Kumar, 91, reveals details about his relationship with Madhubala that continues to intrigue cinema fans even today.

The screen icon fondly remembers Madhubala as a great artiste and “vivacious and spirited person” with whom he attained an ease while working in 1951 film ‘Tarana’.

“I must admit that I was attracted to her (Madhubala) both as a fine co-star and as a person who had some of the attributes I hoped to find in a woman at that age and time… She, as I said earlier, was very sprightly and vivacious and, as such, she could draw me out of my shyness and reticence effortlessly,” Kumar says in the book, published by Hay House.

Their pairing in K Asif’s ‘Mughal-E-Azam’ made headlines because of rumours about their emotional involvement, which made the director very happy. Madhubala confided to Asif about her feelings for Kumar and the director encouraged her.

But unfortunately things soured badly during the long production of the classic.

“I sensed, Asif was seriously trying to mend the situation for her when matters began to sour between us, thanks to her father’s attempt to make the proposed marriage a business venture,” Kumar recalls.

Their relationship worsened during the shooting of the film. Kumar reveals that the feather scene, described as one of the most sensuous moments in Hindi cinema, was shot when they had stopped speaking to each other.

“The outcome was that halfway through the production of ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ we were not even talking to each other. The classic scene with the feather coming between our lips, which set a million imaginations on fire, was shot when we had completely stopped even greeting each other,” Kumar writes.

The actor says the tribute for that scene should go to “the artistry of two professionally committed actors” for keeping aside their personal differences to carry out the vision of the director.

Madhubala’s father Ataullah Khan had his own production company and he was only too glad to have two stars under the same roof.

Angelina Jolie - Cruel scene in 'Maleficent' is metaphor for rape

Addressing more than 300 government dignitaries at the London-hosted Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict, UN Special Envoy Jolie has been asked about the scene in the film, in which the titular character’s wings are torn off her body by a childhood friend, reported Ace Showbiz.

“We were very conscious, the writer (Linda Woolverton) and I, that it was a metaphor for rape. This would be the thing that would make her lose sight. At a certain point, the question of the story is what could possibly bring her back?

“The core of [the film] is abuse, and how the abused have a choice of abusing others or overcoming and remaining loving, open people. The question was asked, ‘What could make a woman become so dark? To lose all sense of her maternity, her womanhood, and her softness?,’” she said.

The Nicole Kidman-starrer film is set to release in India on June 13.

Directed by French director Olivier Dahan, the film is a biopic of Hollywood star Grace Kelly, her crisis of marriage and identity during a dispute between Monaco’s Prince Rainier III and France’s Charles de Gaulle in 1962.

“I feel films like ‘Grace of Monaco’ do not really create a buzz in India. Our audience prefer superhero films or Oscar nominated films. Since we have the resources, we are trying to release the film in more than 70 screens (in India),” Uday told us.

He feels that the film will do well in India provided it garners good reviews.

“I am not looking at making money with the film in India. We are releasing the film here as a prestige issue. We hope it recovers the money spent on marketing it in India. I am still testing the waters with this film and hopefully with my forthcoming films we will do better,” he said.

Uday is the CEO of YRF Entertainment, the international film production wing of Yash Raj Films.

‘Grace of Monaco’ was the opening film at the 67th Cannes Film Festival, for which Uday was present.

“I am happy that we could present the film at such a prestigious film festival. When the film was premiered, it got a standing ovation which was an added bonus as that shows people also liked the film,” he said.
