Rating : ★★★★
There’s a point at around the halfway mark in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 where the movie just appears to decrease to a crawl, with long beats between the discussions. We are viewing a long talk in Peter Parker’s (Andrew Garfield) room. It’s a very telling moment, considering that there’s hardly ever a min to breathe or else in the longest Spiderman caper ever before.
The Spiderman reboot’s second installation is anything yet boring and you will certainly not regret having actually viewed it. There’s plenty of action to keep you hooked, and for as soon as Spiderman is the comical superhero that the people of NYC love. Despite all that, though, it’s entangled in a web of myriad subplots; they appear to intertwine at will, without any sort of obligation to an overarching plot.
Spiderman is as much about a kid maturing and taking care of ‘life’ as it has to do with heroes combating bad guys (and there’s a lot of that). So while Parker is combating hooligans, Gwen Stacy (Emma Rock) is providing her valedictorian speech, regarding growing up and compromising points to do what you think is right. The speech is intercut with scenes where Spiderman is combating the plutonium-thieving bad individuals, so it appears apt and sweet for the moment, only to take a much darker turn later on in the flick.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2′s largest risk is that there are a lot of subplots taking place and too many characters introduced. It’s all crammed securely, which would certainly have been terrific, if there was a semblance of cohesion. In between Spidey’s amusing retorts, the breathtaking jumps, the amusing sparring, and all that glossy electrical power flying around, The Fantastic Spider-Man 2 seems a slightly overdressed and stale. It leaves us hoping the next one will certainly have a bit more brighten and less fat.
